It is all over for the Vermont Mountaineers. The two time defending New England Collegiate Baseball League         champions were beaten in Maine Tuesday night by the Sanford Mainers 1-0 in the third and deciding game of  their opening round playoff series. The Mainers win the series two games to one. The Mainers plated the game's only run in the seventh inning to hang the loss on Vermont starter Nick Greenwood who deserved a better fate, allowing only four hits over six and two-thirds innings. But Vermont managed only five hits, three of them from catcher Gerald Ogrinc in suffering their season ending defeat.

It will come down to a must win game on the road for the Vermont Mountaineers. The Mountaineers were beaten 5-2 by the Sanford Mainers on Monday night in the completion of the suspended second game of the their New England Collegiate Baseball League series at Montpelier's Recreation Field. The third and deciding game of the series will be played on Monday night in Maine.

The second game of the New England Collegiate Baseball league series between the Vermont Mountaineers and the Sanford Mainers at Montpelier's Recreation Field was suspended due to rain in the fifth inning on Sunday night. The game will resume on Monday evening.

 

 

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

The Vermont two time defending New England Collegiate Baseball League champion Mountaineers opened defense of their title on Saturday night, topping the Sanford Mainers in Maine 5-3. Former South Burlington Rebel Casey Harman scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out four in earning the win. Nick Panzarella, Joe Sparacino and Gerald Ogrinc each drilled a pair of hits as the Mountaineers grabbed a one game to none lead in the best of three series.

The Vermont Mountaineers finished up the regular season on Thursday night in Connecticut with a 12-3 win over the Manchester Silk Worms. Jonathan Roof ripped five hits and Nick Harris added a pair and drove in four runs for the winners.

 

 

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The two time defending champions are going back to the New England Collegiate Baseball League playoffs. The Vermont Mountaineers booked their spot in the post season on Wednesday night as they beat the Lowell All Americans at Montpelier's Recreation Field 5-2. The Mountaineers scored four runs in the third inning and held on for the win. Joe Sparacino ripped a two run single and UVM Catamount and former St. Johnsbury Hilltopper Ethan Paquette launched a two run homer in the big inning as Vermont improved to 22-18 on the season.

 

 

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers split a doubleheader with the Sanford Mainers on Tuesday at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Vermont won the seven inning first game 7-6. Playing as the road team on their home field in the makeup game the Mountaineers scored five times in the top of the first inning and went on to the victory. Jeff Mercer had a pair of hits and drove in two runs and UVM Catamount Matt Duffy added a double and three RBI's. But three Mainers' pitchers combined on a two hitter as the visitors took the nightcap 7-1. The split leaves Vermont at 21-18, three games up on Holyoke in the race for the New England Collegiate Baseball League's last North Division Playoff spot. 

 

 

Monday, July 28th, 2008

The days are dwindling down to a precious few in the New England Collegiate Baseball League's playoff race, and the Vermont Mountaineers are making their push. Vermont opened a two and half game lead on Holyoke for the final North Division playoff spot on Monday night, topping the North Shore Navigators 5-0 at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Pitchers Eric Smith, Casey Harman, Alejandro Balsinde and Dusty Odenbach combined on a six hitter and the Mountaineers blew open a close game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to improve their record to 20-17. Nick Harris drilled a pair of doubles and drove in two runs, Nick Panzarella added two hits and two RBI's and Jonathan Roof chipped in three hits in the win.

 

 

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers picked up a much needed win on Sunday night, topping the Pittsfield Dukes in Massachusetts 7-5. Vermont built an early 6-0 lead and held on for the win which keeps them in the thick of the New England Collegiate Baseball League's playoff race. Steven Felix ripped a pair of doubles, stole two bases and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Vermont attack. 

 

 

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers managed just three hits on Saturday night, falling to the North Shore Navigators in Massachusetts 8-0. UVM shortstop Matt Duffy had the only extra base hit, a double as the Mountaineers slipped to 18-17 on the season. There was good news though as Holyoke dropped both ends of a doubleheader, slipping ah half game back of Vermont in the race for the final play off spot in the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Northern Division.

After a rain filled week the Vermont Mountaineers got back to baseball on Friday night in a big way on Friday night, dropping two out of three games in a tripleheader with the Holyoke Sox. Vermont won the first game 4-3, but then dropped the next two 6-5 and 2-0. The night leaves the two teams tied for the final playoff spot in the Northern Division of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

 

 

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

The up and down Vermont Mountaineers season is on a definite upswing. The Mountaineers scored seven runs in the first three inning on Thursday night, going on to an 11-0 win over the Keene Swamp Bats in New Hampshire. Vermont took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Kevin Nieto homer run. Then after UVM Catamount and former St. Johnsbury Hillltopper Ethan Paquette singled home a run in the second, the Mountaineers blew the game wide open with five runs in the third, four of them crossing the plate on a grand slam homerun by Steven Felix. Paquette finished with three hits while Nieto, Felix, Nick Harris and Greg Sherry added two each. Eric Smith worked the first five innings, scattering four hits and striking out six to earn the win. Former South Burlington Rebel Casey Harman followed with three innings of two hit relief. He fanned four. The win was Vermont's fourth straight and improved their record to 17-13 0n the season.

 

 

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday night, beating the Danbury Westerners 3-1 at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Vermont broke a scoreless tie on an RBI single by Steven Felix. They scored a second run on a Nick Harris single and added a third when Kevin Nieto stole third and scored on a throwing error. Josh Syberg scattered four hits over six innings and struck out eight as Vermont improved their record to 16-13 on the season.

Earlier in the day former South Burlington Rebel and current Clemson pitcher Casey Harman of the Mountaineers was named to be the starting pitcher for the North Division in the upcoming NECBL All Star Game. Vermont's Nick Harris was named the starting designated hitter, while Gerald Ogrinc, Nieto and reliever Dustin Odenback were named as reserves. 

 

 

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers got seven brilliant innings from Nick Greenwood and the offense backed him up with four early runs, going on to a 6-1 win over the Manchester Silkworms on Tuesday night in Connecticut. Greenwood scattered three hits and struck out nine in evening his record at 3-3. Vermont scored four times in the third inning. Jon Roof tripled and scored on a fielders choice, Nick Harris followed with a double, Joe Sparacino singled home a pair of runs and Greg Sherry singled home another. The Mountaineers added single runs in the seventh and eighth inning on an RBI single by UVM shortstop Matt Duffy and and RBI single by Harris. With the win Vermont improves to 15-13 on the season. 

 

 

 

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Nick Harris lined a one out single in the bottom of the tenth inning on Monday night, giving the Vermont Mountaineers a cone from behind 5-4 victory over the Newport Gulls at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Trailing 4-1, the Mountaineers had rallied with three runs in the last of the ninth to tie the game, setting the stage for the tenth inning win. RBI singles by Kevin Nieto, Harris and Jeff Mercer tied the game with nobody out in the ninth, but Vermont failed to get the winning run home then, but they took care of that in the tenth. Nieto led the Mountaineers with three hits, while Harris and Steven Felix added two each as Vermont climbed back a game over .500 at 14-13 on the season.

The Keene Swamp Bats pushed across a run in the bottom of the tenth inning on Saturday night, beating the Vermont Mountaineers in New Hampshire 4-3. Nick Harris tripled and homered and Alan Oaks added a single and a homer, but Vermont managed just two other hits in slipping back to the .500 mark at 13-13 on the season. 

 

 

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

A very long night in Massachusetts on Thursday night for the Vermont Mountaineers. The North Adams Steeple Cats pounded five Vermont pitchers for 17 hits, ripping the Mountaineers 13-1. In a losing cause catcher Steven Felix had three of Vermont's four hits and drove in their only run with an eighth inning double as the Mountaineers slipped to 13-12 on the season.

 

 

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers jumped out early with three second inning runs on Wednesday night and went on to beat the Torrington Twisters 5-2 at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Kevin Nieto had three hits and Jonathan Roof knocked in a pair of runs for the Mountaineers, and four Vermont pitchers combined to toss a seven hitter as the home club improved their season record to 13-11.

 

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers took an early lead, only to be overwhelmed down the stretch by the red hot Sanford Mainers, falling 9-4 on Tuesday night in Maine. Vermont scored a run in the second and added a pair in the third for an early 3-0 advantage, but the Mainers tied it with a a run in the third and two in the fourth, then took the lead for good with a pair in the sixth and blew the game open with four more in the eighth. UVM Catamount and former St. Johnsbury Hilltopper Ethan Paquette led Vermont, going three for three with a double and an RBI. Nick Harris added a single and a double and drove home a pair. The loss snaps a three game Vermont winning streak, dropping their record to 12-11 on the season.

A wild one on Monday night at Montpelier's Recreation Field, as the Vermont Mountaineers pushed across four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge the Lowell All Americans 9-8. Vermont led 2-0, trailed 5-2, rallied to tie at 5-5, and fell behind again 7-5 before putting together three hits and four walks in the eighth to pull out the win. UVM shortstop Matt Duffy banged out a pair of hits and drove in a run and Nick Harris and Alan Oaks hit back to back fourth inning homers for the Mountaineers, who improved to 12-10 with their third straight victory. 

 

 

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

A huge day in Massachusetts for the Vermont Mountaineers on Sunday. The Mountaineers snapped a three game losing streak by sweeping the Lowell All Americans 8-3 and 4-3. In the first game former South Burlington Rebel Casey Harman scattered six hits and allowed one earned run over five innings in the seven inning game to run his record to 4-0. The Mountaineers jumped out early, scoring seven runs, five of them unearned, in the first two innings to cruise to the win. Jeff Mercer drove in three runs and Alan Oaks homered and knocked in two for the winners. In the nightcap Vermont again scored early, piling all of their runs into the first three innings. Nick Harris had a pair of hits including a homer and Michael Nesbitt and Steven Felix each chipped in a pair of hits for the winners who climb back a game over the.500 mark at 11-10 on the season.    

 

 

Friday, July 4th, 2008

The up and down season continues on the downward side for the Vermont Mountaineers. The Mountaineers dropped their third straight on Friday night, seeing a 4-0 lead slip away and falling to the Keene Swamp Bats 8-5 at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Vermont built the lead on a shaky Keene defense, scoring three runs in the first inning on one hit and four Swamp Bats errors. They added a fourth run on a fourth inning homer by center fielder Kevin Nieto. But Keene rallied for three runs on four hits in the seventh and then took advantage of Vermont's defense, scoring four runs on a pair of hits and four Vermont errors in the eighth to win it. The loss drops the Mountaineers a game under the .500 mark at 9-10 on the season.  

 

 

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The North Shore Navigators jumped on Vermont Mountaineers starter Nick Greenwood for four runs in the third inning on Wednesday night at Montpelier's Recreation Field and went on to beat the Mountaineers 4-3. On the other side four North Shore pitchers combined to limit Vermont to just four hits. Alan Oaks had a single and a triple, scored a run and drove one in for the Mountaineers, who slipped to 9-9 on the season.

 

 

Monday, June 30th, 2008

The Sanford Mainers pounded out eleven hits and took advantage of four Vermont Mountaineers errors on Monday night, whipping the Mountaineers 10-3 at Montpelier's Recreation Field. The Mainers blew open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh. Center fielder Kevin Nieto led the Mountaineers with three hits including his second homerun of the season, but Vermont saw their record slip to 9-8 on the season.

The Vermont Mountaineers broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning then blew the game open with three more in the bottom of the sixth, going on to a 10-4 victory over the Holyoke Sox on Sunday evening at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Catcher Gerald Ogrinc ripped a pair of hits and drove in three runs to lead a nine hit Vermont attack, and the Mountaineers took full advantage of five hit batters, a pair of wild pitches, a balk and four Holyoke errors to win their second straight game and their seventh in their last eight starts.

 

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers continue to ride the strong arm of former South Burlington Rebel Casey Harman. Harman tossed six innings of four hit baseball striking out six to improve to 3-0 on the season and the Mountaineers topped the North Shore Navigators in Massachusetts on Saturday night 3-2. Vermont scored a run in the fourth on an RBI single by UVMer Matt Duffy, then added two insurance runs in the ninth on a two run single by Greg Ogrinc. They needed those as the Navigators rallied for a pair in the last of the ninth against the bullpen, but Vermont held on for the win.

The North Shore Navigators jumped on the Vermont Mountaineers bullpen and defense for seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings on Friday night, snapping Vermont's five game winning streak with an 8-2 victory at Montpelier's Recreation Field. After five scoreless innings each team scored a single run in the sixth, and it was tied 1-1 going to the seventh. But the Navigators plated four runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batter in the seventh, then added three more in an ugly eighth in which the Vermont defense dissolved in a four error implosion. Vermont scored their runs in the sixth as Greg Sherry singled, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a ground out, and in the eighth on an RBI single by Steven Felix.

The Vermont Mountaineers scored four runs in the first inning on Thursday night in Connecticut and went on to win their fifth straight game, beating the Torrington Twisters 5-2. The Vermont bats banged out twelve hits, led by the four for five performance by centerfield Kevin Nieto. Nieto started the first inning rally with a run scoring triple. First baseman Michael Nesbitt added a pair of hits and drove in two runs. UVM Catamount and former St. Johnsbury Hilltopper Ethan Paquette added a pair of hits and drove home a run. Eric Smith tossed six innings of three hit five strikeout ball to earn the victory.

 

 

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

The Vermont Mountaineers rallied from an early 4-0 deficit on Wednesday night in Rhode Island and went on to win their fourth straight, beating the Newport Gulls 7-5. Down 4-0 in the fifth Vermont cut the margin in half on a two run homer by second baseman Nick Harris. Then down 5-2 in the eighth the Mountaineers rallied for four runs. UVMer and third baseman Matt Duffy singled home one run and shortstop Jonathan Roof followed with a three run double. They then added an insurance run on a ninth inning single by DH Jeff Mercer. Dusty Odenbach pitched two innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out four to earn the win.

Three Vermont pitchers combined on a five hit shutout Tuesday night as the Vermont Mountaineers won their third straight, topping the North Adams Steeplecats 4-0 at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Starter Josh Syberg worked six innings of three hit ball striking out eight to get the win, with relievers Chris Petrini and RJ Preach combining on three innings of two hit relief. Alan Oaks, Michael Nesbitt and Nick Panzarella each had a pair of hits and Greg Sherry drove in a pair of runs for the winners.

A Vermont native continues to throw great baseball for the Vermont Mountaineers. Clemson Tiger and former South Burlington Rebel Casey Harman spun eight innings two hit eight strikeout baseball on Saturday night as the Mountaineers beat the Pittsfield Dukes at Montpelier's Recreation Field 2-0. Vermont scored in the fourth inning as right fielder Steve Felix singled, stole second, stole third and scored on a throwing error. They added a second run in the fifth on an RBI single by left fielder Scott Schauer.

The Vermont Mountaineers broke out of a season long hitting slump on Friday night in Connecticut, snapping a five game losing streak with an 8-4 win over the Danbury Westerners. Vermont scored twice in the first inning on a two run single by designated hitter Jeff Mercer. They added two more in the third on a two run double by UVM Catamount Matt Duffy. They got two more in the fifth on an error and an RBI hit by rightfielder Alan Oaks, and put up two more in the sixth on a two run single by Mercer. In total six Mountaineers contributed two hits each to the fourteen hit explosion, with Mercer leading the way with five RBI's.

It is an unaccustomed spot for the Vermont Mountaineers. The two time defending NECBL champions are 2-6 to start the 2008 season. Vermont dropped their fifth straight on Wednesday night, falling to the Lowell All Americans in Massachusetts 8-4. The All Americans broke a 4-4 tie, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win it. Vermont had comeback from 1-0 and 4-2 deficits to twice tie things up before the game got away. UVM Catamount and former St. Johnsbury Hilltopper Ethan Paquette had a single and a double and scored a run and his Catamount teammate Matt Duffy added a hit and scored a run.

The Vermont Mountaineers continue as cool as our unseasonable June weather. The Mountaineers managed only five hits over twelve innings on Tuesday night, dropping their fourth straight game as they were beaten by the Keene Swamp Bats in New Hampshire 3-2. Nick Harris led Vermont at the plate with a pair of hits, scoring one of their runs and driving in the other and four Vermont pitchers combined on a 12 inning eight hitter and struck out fourteen Keene hitters, but all in a losing cause.

 

 

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Things have started a little slowly for the Vermont Mountaineers. The two time defending NECBL champions slipped to 2-4 on the young season, beaten by the Keene Swamp Bats 3-1 at Montpelier's Recreation Field. The visitors jumped on Vermont reliever Chris Pickering for three runs in the seventh inning to earn the victory. Vermont, which scored its only run on a third inning throwing error wasted another strong pitching effort by former South Burlington High School star Casey Harman. Harman tossed five innings of two hit baseball while striking out seven, but was not involved in the decision.

The Vermont Mountaineers rallied from a 2-0 deficit scoring twice in the eighth and once in the ninth to take a 3-2 lead, only to see the Sanford Mainers return the favor, pushing across a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Vermont on Friday night in Maine 4-3. Held hitless for the first seven and a third innings, the Mountaineers finally broke through in the eighth on a walk, their first hit, a Nick Panzarella single, an error and a sacrifice fly. It appeared they would steal the win as they then took the lead on their second hit of the night, a Michael Nesbitt homer in the ninth. But in an ugly bottom of the inning Sanford scored twice on a strike three passed ball, two bunt singles and two bases loaded walks to steal the win back.  Vermont wasted a strong pitching performance by Josh Syberg who tossed seven innings of four hit ball striking out five but was hung with the loss.

The Vermont Mountaineers slipped to 2-2 on the young season on Thursday night, falling in Massachusetts to the Holyoke Blue Sox 5-0. The home team jumped Vermont starter Eric Smith for four runs in the first two innings and the Mountaineers were unable to respond.

The Vermont Mountaineers are get excellent early season pitching. Vermont recorded their second straight shutout win at home on Tuesday night, beating the Holyoke Blue Sox 3-0 in a rain shortened five inning game at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Nick Greenwood tossed a three hitter striking out nine in recording the win. RBI doubles by Michael Nesbitt and Nick Harris and a long homerun by Alan Oaks accounted for the three Mountaineers' runs.

Casey Harman came home Sunday night. The former South Burlington Rebel returned to Vermont for the summer and the Clemson University lefthander was impressive in his debut for the Vermont Mountaineers. Harman scattered three hits and struck out seven over five innings and the Mountaineer bullpen fanned nine more over the final four as Vermont won their home opener from the Lowell All Americans 2-0 at Montpelier's Recreation Field. Kevin Nieto homered for Vermont in the win.

The Vermont Mountaineers played the sixth season opener in their history on Saturday night. They have still never won one. The two time defending New England Collegiate Baseball League champions opened on the road Saturday night with a 4-3 loss at North Shore in Massachusetts. Vermont took an early 3-1 lead but saw it get away in the loss. They play Lowell in their home opener on Sunday night at Montpelier's Recreation Field.
