    1. Vermont Lake Monsters Baseball

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters scored nine runs in beating the Aberdeen Ironbirds Tuesday night in the first game of their three game series at Centennial Field. They only scored two more the rest of the series. Before 3,012 fans on Thursday night at Centennial Vermont wasted a strong pitching performance, falling to the visitors 2-1. Vermont pitchers Brad Peacock, Austin Garrett and Johan Figuereo combined on a six hitter, allowing only one run and striking out seven, but the offense was stagnate, running their scoreless inning streak to sixteen before Derek Norris drove in Jake Dugger with a two out RBI double in the ninth inning. Still that was not enough as Michael Guerrero fanned with Norris at second to end the game and drop Vermont eight games under .500 at 23-31 0n the season.

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

The Aberdeen Ironbirds scored a pair of unearned first inning runs without a hit on Wednesday night at Centennial Field and went on to beat the Vermont Monsters 3-1. Aberdeen used a pair of walks by starter Ricardo Pecina and a two out throwing error by Vermont shortstop Nick Arata to score the two runs. Vermont got one back in the bottom of the inning on a Derek Norris RBI single, but that would be their only run of the night. Pecina left after throwing forty first inning pitches and the Vermont bullpen did a superaltive job from there, as relievers Jose Pinales, Kevin Light and David Slovak combined on eight innings of one run/seven hit baseball while striking out thirteen, but the offense could not get them any runs. Overall Vermont pitchers finished with fifteen strikeouts, but Aberdeen hurlers topped that with a sixteen strikeout performance.

Before the game it was announced that three Monsters, Norris, P.J. Dean and Michael Guerrero have been chosen to play in the New York Penn League All Star Game which will be played at Tri-City in Troy, New York next Tuesday.

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters erupted for their biggest inning of the season on Tuesday night, scoring six runs in the third inning and going on to beat the Aberdeen Ironbirds 9-5 at Centennial Field. Trailing 3-1 Vermont got RBI singles from Derek Norris and Michael Guerrero to tie the game at three, then jumped ahead on a two out two run double by Yeurys Tejeda and added two more runs on Yhonsen Lopez's two run single. Tejeda ripped three hits, drove in three runs, scored three times and stole three bases to lead the Vermont offense while new second baseman Jake Smolinski added a pair of hits in the win. Patrick Arnold allowed three earned runs over five and two-thirds innings to earn his first win of the season as Vermont won their second in a row and their fourth in their last six games.

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Each step is a small one, but the Vermont Lake Monsters appear to be slowly turning around their recent long slide. Vermont made it three wins in their last five games on Monday night as they split a twi-night doubleheader with the Auburn Doubledays, losing the first game 3-1 before coming back to win the nightcap 6-0 at Centennial Field. In the first game Vermont managed just two hits, one of them a fourth inning homerun by Derek Norris. Vermont starter Pat McCoy pitched well, allowing only one earned run over five innings, but it was a pair of unearned runs in the fourth that hung him with the loss. But Vermont came back in the nightcap behind the superlative pitching of P.J. Dean. Dean scattered five hits, struck out ten and did not walk a batter over six innings, earning his third win and lowering his ERA to 0.49. The Monsters got him four runs in the third inning, two on a Michael Guerrero homer and another on a Yuerys Tejeda single. They added two more in the fourth, one on a Tyler Moore double. The split leaves Vermont at 22-29 on the season. They trail first place Lowell by four games in the New York Penn League's Stedler Division.

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters took full advantage of ten walks issued by Auburn pitching, beating the Doubledays 5-2 on Saturday night at Centennial Field. James Keithley drove in three runs and Dani Arias banged out a pair of hits and scored three times for the Monsters. On the hill Will Atwood and three relievers combined on a seven hitter with Atwood picking up his first win of the season while extending his scoreless innings streak to seventeen and a third innings. Now 21-28 on the season Vermont will host Auburn again on Sunday evening at Centennial Field.

Friday, August 8th, 2008

The Hudson Valley Renegades jumped on Vermont starter Brad Peacock for three runs in the bottom of the first inning on Friday night and went on to beat the Lake Monsters in Fishkill, New York 4-1. Vermont scored their only run in the fifth inning when Ricky Nolan led the inning with a double and later scored on an infield out. Now 20-28 on the season Vermont returns home to meet Auburn on Saturday night at Centennial Field.

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

The losing streak is history for the Vermont Lake Monsters. The Monsters pushed across four runs in the top of the fifth inning on Thursday night in Fishkill, New York, and went on to beat the Hudson Valley Renegades  6-2. Vermont took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Catcher Ricky Nolan, hitting .081 at the start of the night, doubled home one run and scored the other on a wild pitch. Then after Hudson Valley scored a run in the bottom of the third, Vermont scored four times in the fifth. Nolan led the inning with a bunt single and Jake Dugger walked. Michael Guerrero singled home one run, Derek Norris drove in another with a ground out, and Stephen Englund capped the inning with a two run homer. That was enough for left hander Ricardo Pecina who worked five and two third innings of six hit ball allowing one run to earn the win. Jose Pinales and Steven Stewart finished up. Vermont, now 20-27 on the season, will finish up the three game series on Friday night at Hudson Valley.

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

A day off was nice, but it did not solve the woes that are plaguing the Vermont Lake Monsters. The Monsters dropped their eighth straight game and thirteenth in their last fourteen starts on Wednesday night, falling to the Hudson Valley Renegades in New York 12-4. Vermont scored in the first inning, putting together three straight hits including a Stephen Englund RBI single for a quick 1-0 lead. But with a run in, two on and nobody out they failed to get anything more out of the inning and the host Renegades then jumped them for five hits and four runs in the bottom of the first and the game was effectively over right there. On the night Hudson Valley pounded out 21hits, the most allowed by the Monsters this season. Vermont scored their other runs in the eighth and ninth innings with third baseman Yeurys Tejada delivering his first New York Penn League homerun, a two run shot in the ninth, but it was way too little and way too late as the Monsters slipped to 19-26 on the season.

Monday, August 4th, 2008

A better effort, but another loss on Monday night for the Vermont Lake Monsters. The Monsters dropped their seventh straight falling to the Lowell Spinners in Massachusetts 3-2. The Monsters scored first in the third on a Nick Arata single, a Jake Dugger double and a Yhonsen Lopez sacrifice fly. Lowell tied the game with a run in the fourth and grabbed a 3-1 lead with a two run homer in the fifth. Vermont got one back on a sixth inning double by Michael Guerrero, but failed to get the tying run home when Guerrero was thrown out at the plate after a Blake Stouffer single.

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Not even sending out a starting pitcher to work on his birthday was enough to save the Vermont Lake Monsters on Sunday afternoon. Pat McCoy gave up five runs on five extra base hits over five innings in taking the loss on his 20th birthday as the Monsters dropped their sixth straight, and their eleven in the last twelve starts, falling to the Lowell Spinners in Massachusetts 7-1. Vermont managed only three hits, getting two of them in the ninth inning, including a Tyler Moore single that drove in their only run.

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Another night ... another way to lose for the Vermont Lake Monsters on Saturday night. In Lowell, Massachusetts the Lowell Spinners turned four walks, a sacrifice fly,  and a pair of doubles into a five run fifth inning and went on to beat Vermont 6-4. Vermont starter Will Atwood worked four scoreless inning, but the Spinners took advantage of wildness by reliever Jose Pinales to grab a 5-0 lead and held off a four run Vermont rally in the seventh to take the win, handing Vermont their tenth loss in their last eleven games. Steven Englund had two of the Monsters' five hits as Vermont fell four game back of thje Spinners in the New York Penn League's Stedler division standings.

Friday, August 1st, 2008

The Lowell Spinners jumped Vermont starter Brad Pacock for six runs in the first three innings on Friday night in Massachusetts and went on to beat the Lake Monsters 6-1. After Derek Norris staked Peacock to a 1-0 lead with a first inning homer the righthander walked in the tying run in the second and was touched for a two run homer in the third and a three run shot in the fourth in suffering his third loss of the season. Down 7-1 going to the eighth inning Vermont got to within three as Norris singled home one run and Michael Guerrero drove in two more, but that was as clopse as they would come. The loss, Vermont's ninth in their last ten games, drops them three games back of Lowell in the New York Penn League's Stedler Division standings.

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The frustration just continues to grow for the Vermont Lake Monsters. For the fourth time in the last five days the Monsters carried a lead into the late innings on Thursday afternoon at Centennial Field, and for the fourth time the lead slipped away, as Brooklyn tied the game in the eighth and then beat the Monsters 5-4 in fourteen innings 5-4. Playing before 3,173 fans in an unusual Thursday afternoon game Vermont scored in the first inning on a Nick Arata double and a Michael Guerrero RBI single. They built the lead to 3-0 in the second on an Arata sacrifice fly and an infield hit by Dani Arias. Brooklyn scored a single run on a fourth inning wild pitch, but Vermont got it back on Derek Norris' 7th inning homerun and the Monsters took a 4-1 advantage to the eighth, but a two out three run homer tied the game for Brooklyn, and they then won it on a double and a single with two out in the fourteenth. Vermont pitching held the Cyclones in check for most of the afternoon, but both working their third inning of relief, Johan Figuereo gave up the homer in the eighth and Austin Garrett was touched for the two, two out hits that won it in the fourteenth. Vermont played multiple extra innings for the second time in four days, but unlike Monday night's eighteen inning win, this one ended in their sixth loss on the seven game homestand. They will open a seven game road trip in Lowell, Massachusetts on Friday night.

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The way things are going these days for the Vermont Lake Monsters, one big inning from the opposition has become enough to beat them. Wednesday night it wasn't even that big an inning. The Brooklyn Cyclones score two runs, one of them unearned, in the seventh inning at Centennial Field and beat Vermont 2-1. Vermont had taken a one nothing lead in the second inning when Derek Norris doubled, was sacrificed to third, and scored on a Tyler Moore sacrifice fly. But that would be it for Monsters scoring and the Cyclones used a walk, a pair of Vermont errors and a run scoring single to take the win. The loss wasted a superb pitching performance by right hander Patrick Arnold, who took a one hitter into the sixth but ended up getting hung with an undeserved defeat. Norris continued to BE Vermont's offense, reaching base four times with a pair of hits and a pair of walks. He continues to lead the New York Penn League in on base percentage.

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

It would have been a great momentum builder ... instead it turned out to be a momentum crusher. The Brooklyn Cyclones pushed across four runs in the top of the eighth inning on Tuesday night, beating the Vermont Lake Monsters 4-3 before 3,389 fans at Centennial Field. Coming off their eighteen inning win over Lowell on Monday night Vermont took an early lead and carried it into the eighth before the Cyclones jumped Vermont's third pitcher, Randy Matias for three hits and a walk to steal the win. As they have in recent games Vermont's bats continued to slumber. The Monsters managed only three hits, scoring twice in the first inning and adding another in the third. They failed to take advantage of wildness by Brooklyn pitchers who walked thirteen Vermont hitters on the night. But the Monsters left thirteen men on base. Now 19-20 on the season, the Monsters host Brooklyn again on Wednesday night at Centennial.

Monday, July 28th, 2008

It was a VERY VERY long time in coming, but the Vermont Lake Monsters picked up a huge win on Monday night. The Monsters pushed across the winning run on a one out single by Michael Guerrero in the bottom of the eighteenth inning, beating the Lowell Spinners 5-4. There were 3,113 fans on hand when the game started at 7:05. There were about 100 left when it ended at 12:36 AM. The game, which set a Vermont franchise record for innings and time (5:31), featured thirteen pitchers, twenty-nine strikeouts, twenty seven walks, and thirty five men left on base. Lowell hit a two run homer off Vermont starter Pat McCoy in the top of the first inning, but Vermont answered in the bottom of the frame on Derek Norris' three run shot to left. It was the start of a huge night for Norris who reached base eight times on three hits and five walks. Lowell tied the game with an unearned run in the third and took a 4-3 lead in the fifth before the Monsters tied it in the seventh on Nick Arata's two out RBI single, and that was where it stayed until the eighteenth. Not that there weren't chances for both teams to win it. Vermont left the bases loaded in the ninth, tenth, twelfth and fourteenth innings. They had a man at third and nobody out in the sixteenth and failed to score. But finally in the eighteenth, with Lowell forced to bring a catcher on to pitch, Vermont was able to win it. Blake Stouffer and James Keithley walked to start the inning. It appeared the frustration might continue when Norris singled to left only to have Stouffer thrown out at the plate, but Guerrero followed with a shot to the left field corner to win it. The Vermont bullpen was outstanding, as Johan Figuereo, Steven Stewart, Carlos Peralta, Kevin Light and Austin Garrett combined to work thirteen innings of five hit shutout baseball, walking seven but also striking out nine. The win moves Vermont back to .500 at 19-19 and back into a first place tie with Lowell in the New York Penn League's Stedler Division standings.

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

There are some loses that hurt worse than others ... this one was a killer. The Vermont Lake Monster took a 1-0 lead into the top of the ninth inning on Sunday evening at Centennial Field, only to see the Lowell Spinners erupt for three runs to hand Vermont their fifth straight defeat, beating the Monsters 3-1. Vermont scored their only run on a two out seventh inning homerun by Tyler Moore and it appeared that would stand up, but in the ninth the Spinners jumped closer David Slovak for three runs on three hits and a walk to steal the win. The loss wasted a superb pitching performance by Vermont starter Will Atwood. Atwood worked six and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball, allowing only three hits and striking out eight. After allowing a leadoff first inning single he retired eighteen men in a row before giving up back to back hits with one out in the seventh. He fanned the last man he faced before leaving, but got a no decision. The loss drops the Monsters into a second place tie with Oneonta, a game back of new Stedler Division leader Lowell. It also slips them a game under the .500 mark for the first time since late June.

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Home is not a happy place for the Vermont Lake Monsters these days. The Monsters dropped their fourth straight game overall and their fourth straight at Centennial Field on Saturday night, falling to the Lowell Spinners 5-3. Trailing 1-0 Vermont scored the tying run in the bottom half of the first inning on a Blake Stouffer RBI single, but Lowell then built a 4-1 lead before Vermont plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to move back within one at   4-3. Jake Dugger drove in the third run with an RBI single but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double and Vermont did not get another hit the rest of the way. Brad Peacock allowed three runs of four and two-thirds innings to suffer the loss, which dropped the Monsters into a three way tie with Lowell and Oneonta for the lead in the New York Penn League's Stedler Division.

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Oh, those bases on balls ! Vermont Lake Monster pitchers walked seven men on Friday night , and all seven scored, as the Lowell Spinners belted Vermont 11-3 before 3,262 fans at Centennial Field. The Spinners belted three homeruns in the win. In addition to the walks Vermont pitchers did strikeout fourteen Spinners in the game, while Dani Arias and Blake Stouffer each contributed two hits and Michael Guerrero drove in two runs, but the loss dropped Vermont into a first place tie with Oneonta in the New York Penn League's Stedler Division standings.

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

It was over quickly on Thursday night. The Brooklyn Cyclones scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York 8-1. Newcomer Patrick Arnold was ripped for six runs in the first two and a third innings in his Vermont debut. The Monsters scored their only run on a seventh inning homerun by Michael Guerrero. Vermont struck out eighteen times in the game, one K short of the team's single game record.

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters were held to just four hits in dropping a 2-0 decision to the Brooklyn Cyclones on Wednesday night in New York. The home team pushed across a pair of fifth inning runs to hang the loss on Vermont hurler Tommy Milone. Tyler Moore had two of the Monsters' four hits in the loss.

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters ran their winning streak to three on Tuesday night, topping the Brooklyn Cyclones in New York 6-1. Vermont scored on first inning singles by Derek Norris and Michael Guerrero, a two out run scoring double to the second by Blake Stouffer, and a clutch two out three run double in the fifth by Tyler Moore. Four Vermont pitchers combined on a six hitter with Randy Matias picking up the win and David Slovak earning his fifth save.

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Back after three days of rain, the Vermont Lake Monsters came up with a pair of big wins on Monday night, sweeping the Oneonta Tigers in New York 4-1 and 4-2. Brad Peacock needed only 71 pitches to toss a seven inning complete game in the first game. He spun a four hitter, allowing just one unearned run. Blake Stouffer homered and doubled, driving in two of the Monsters runs. In the night cap three Vermont pitchers combined as the Monsters completed the sweep with a 4-2 win. Nick Arata and Jake Dugger cracked back to back triples in the fifth inning as Vermont rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take the lead for good.

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

The bats have suddenly gone cold for the Vermont Lake Monsters. But credit some of that to the opposition. The Monsters dropped their third straight on Thursday night, beaten by the Williamsport Crosscutters 5-1 at Centennial Field. Vermont managed only six hits, giving them a total of eight in the two games of the series with Williamsport. Crosscutters pitchers combined to fan eight Vermont hitters, giving them 23 in the two games. Over the same two games they have walked only one man. New York Penn League RBI leader Cody Overbeck ripped the first of his three extra base hits, a two run homer off Vermont starter Tommy Milone in the first inning, and the Monsters were playing from behind all night long. Milone settled down after that, allowing only three hits and striking out seven over five innings, but Vermont could not get much going against Williamsport starter Robert Roth, who won his six straight decision, or the three relievers who followed him. So when the visitors touched Vermont reliever Johan Figuereo for three runs in the sixth it was pretty much lights out. With the loss Vermont slips to 15-14, and with Oneonta's 5-4 win over Brooklyn, into a tie for first place in the Stedler Division standings.

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The hits were few and far between on Wednesday night at Centennial Field. The strikeouts were not. The Vermont Lake Monsters managed just two hits and struck out fifteen times, bowing to the Williamsport Crosscutters before 3,561 fans in the opening game of a three game series 2-1. Vermont pitchers did just fine themselves, as Ricardo Pecina, Jose Pinales and Kevin Light combined on a three hitter and struck out eight, but Vermont wasted the effort. The Crosscutters scored their only runs in the second inning. After a two out walk the visitors launched a two run homer off Pecina for a 2-0 lead. Vermont got one back on a two out homer by Blake Stouffer in the bottom of the inning, but as it turned out those would be the only runs of the night. Vermont in fact had only two other base runners. Michael Guerrero led off the fifth inning with a single and Dani Arias reached on a two base throwing error to begin the sixth, but the Monsters failed to take advantage of either chance. With the loss and Oneonta's 4-1 win over Brooklyn Vermont's lead on the Tigers in the New York Penn League's Stedler Division is reduced to just one game.

July, July 14th, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters will return home to Centennial Field later this week off a 3-3 roadtrip. Vermont dropped the final game of the trip in Jamestown, New York on Monday night, falling to the Pinckney Division leading Jamestown Jammers in ten innings 6-5. Vermont had rallied from 4-1 and 5-4 deficits to tie the game, but the Jammers came away with the win, improving their record to 17-7 season. Vermont scored in the third on an RBI fielder's choice by Blake Stouffer. Then down 4-1 they tied the game with three runs in the fifth. Nick Arata doubled and scored on a Dani Arias single. Stouffer then drove in Arias with a base hit and Steven Souza drove home Stouffer with the tying run. Jamestown re-took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Vermont tied it again on a Michael Guerrero homer in the sixth, and that was how it stayed until the tenth. Guerrero, Arata, Arias and Jake Duggar each had two hits, but the loss drops Vermont to 15-12 on the season. They remain in first place in the Stedler Division and return home to host Williamsport in a three game series starting on Wednesday night.

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Derek Norris launched his fourth hit of the game, a two run homer in the top of the tenth inning, sending the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 7-5 win over the Jamestown Jammers in a battle of New York Penn League division leaders out in western New York on Sunday night. Norris also ripped a pair of singles and a double in the Vermont win. Jake Duggar and Tyler Moore added homers, giving Vermont twenty two on the season, Nick Arata drilled a double and a triple, and Michael Guerrero chipped in three singles to the fourteen hit Vermont attack. Steven Stewart tossed two and two thirds innings of hitless relief, striking out a pair to earn the win which improved Vermont's record to 15-11 and upped their lead in the Stedler Division to a game and a half. They'll wrap up their six game roadtrip in Jamestown on Monday night.

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

The Jamestown Jammers jumped Vermont starter Randy Matias for seven runs in the third inning and went on to beat the Lake Monsters 11-3 on Saturday night in western New York. Jamestown, with the New York Penn League's best record at 17-6, added four more runs off reliever Austin Garrett in building an 11-1 lead after five innings and cruised to the win. Stephen Englund singled home a second inning run to give Vermont a brief 1-0 lead and Jake Duggar drove in the other two Vermont runs with a seventh inning double. Now 14-11 on the season and still leading the Stedler Division by a game Vermont will meet the Jammers again on Sunday night in Jamestown.

Friday, July 11th, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters built a 6-0 lead, then held on for a 7-6 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Friday night in Ohio. Vermont scored twice in the first inning. Blake Stouffer walked and rode home on Jake Duggar's triple. Duggar then scored on an RBI single by Jesus Valdez. Duggar then singled home Stephen Englund in the second and Valdez and Tyler Moore launched homers in the third to up the lead to 5-0 before Duggar, who had entered the night one for twenty-four on the season, ripped his third straight hit, a run scoring single in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage. After Mahoning Valley cut it to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth Vermont scored an unearned run in the seventh as England walked, stole second, stole third, and scored on a throwing error. That run proved critical as the Scrappers rallied for four runs in the last of the eighth before David Slovak came out of the Vermont bullpen to record his fourth save of the season. Starter Brad Peacock worked into the sixth inning, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits to earn the win. Duggar finished the night three for five, while Dani Arias added three hits and Valdez and Moore chipped in two each. With the win the Monsters improve to 14-10 and maintain their one game on Lowell in the New York Penn League's Stedler Division standings.

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters scored the first three runs on Thursday night in Ohio, but the night belonged to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, who seized control with a three run fourth inning and went on to beat the Monsters 9-4. Vermont scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a Derek Norris RBI single. They added another in the second as Steven Souza scored on a Dani Arias fielders choice. Then after Mahoning Valley cut the lead to 3-2 Vermont went up 4-2 on a fourth inning single by Arias. But the Scrappers put together five two out hits in the bottom of the fourth to grab the lead, and added two runs each in the sixth and eighth innings to win it going away. The game was marred by a bench clearing confrontation in the eighth inning, with two Scrappers and their manager Travis Fryman all getting ejected. Now 13-10 on the season the Monsters fill finish the series in Mahoning Valley on Friday night.

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

The longball just keeps flying out of the yard for the Vermont Lake Monsters. In Niles, Ohio on Wednesday night the Monsters hit two more homers and won the first game of a six game road trip, beating the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-3. Derek Norris homered in the first inning to give Vermont a quick 1-0 lead. After Mahoning Valley took a 2-1 advantage on a pair of unearned runs in the fourth Vermont jumped back on top on a two run shot by Tyler Moore in the top of the sixth. The two homers were Vermont's 16th and 17th in their last thirteen games. The Scrappers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, but in the seventh Blake Stouffer tripled and scored on a Norris RBI single to give Vermont the lead. Norris then came around to score an insurance run on a Jesus Valdez sacrifice fly. Norris led Vermont with three hits and the two RBI's. On the hill PJ Dean, Kevin Light, Johan Figuereo and David Slovak combined to pitch a six hitter. Light got his second win and Slovak picked up his third save.

Monday, July 7th, 2008

The longball has become a big part of the story for the 2008 Vermont Lake Monsters, and Monday night it was the decisive final page of the story. Designated hitter Blake Stouffer hit a leadoff walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth inning on Monday night at Centennial Field as Vermont beat the Batavia Muckdogs 3-2. Vermont scored in the first inning as Steven Souza doubled with two out and scored on an RBI single by Jesus Valdez. Batavia took a 2-1 lead with a pair of third inning runs, but Vermont tied it in the fifth on back to back doubles by Stouffer and Tyler Moore. It stayed that way until Stouffer led off the ninth with a long shot over both levels of advertising signs in right field to give Vermont the win. Pat McCoy started for Vermont, working five innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs, one of them unearned. Jose Pinales then worked three strong innings of relief and Casey Whitmer worked the ninth, picking up the win. The Monsters get Tuesday off before opening a three game series against Mahoning Valley in Ohio on Wednesday.

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters dug themselves a monstrous hole on Sunday evening at Centennial Field, and then almost climbed out of it before finally falling to the Batavia Muckdogs 10-9. Vermont trailed 10-1 after four and a half innings, and that was still the score going to the bottom of the eighth, before the Monsters pushed across three in the eighth and then five more in the ninth before coming up a run short. Michael Guerrero went four for five including an eighth inning double and a ninth inning three run homer to lead the Vermont attack. Jesus Valdez added a pair of hits and drove in three runs, while Derek Norris added two hits and Steven Souza chipped in his fifth home run of the season in the loss. Starting pitcher Will Atwood was touched for seven hits and six runs, four of them earned, in three innings and reliever Carlos Peralta allowed four runs on five hits and three walks in an inning and two thirds before Austin Garrett and David Slovack came on to shutdown the Muckdogs the rest of the way, allowing for the comeback that came up a run short. The two teams will play the rubber game of their three game series on Monday night at Centennial.

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

The Vermont Lake Monsters pushed a across a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Saturday night, rallying for a 6-5 win over the Batavia Muckdogs at Centennial Field. After Batavia scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie, Vermont came back on a Steven Souza walk, a hit and run single by Jesus Valdez and an RBI single by Michael Guerrero to tie the game at five. Then after Souza stole second, putting runners at second and third Batavia recorded the second out of the inning on a ground out, Guerrero got himself in a rundown between second and third and Valdez broke for the plate, scoring when the Batavia catcher dropped the throw home. It was an exciting end to an exciting game filled with comebacks. Vermont scored first on back to back first inning doubles by Souza and Valdez only to see the Muckdogs respond with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth off Vermont starter Randy Matias to take a 4-1 lead. But the Monsters would rally on a pair of long homeruns, a bases empty one in the fourth by Guerrero and a two run shot in the fifth by Blake Stouffer to tie it at four and set the stage for the eighth inning dramatics. Also of note, was strong work by the Vermont bullpen, as Johan Figuereo, Kevin Light and Steven Stewart combined to work five innings of two hit baseball, allowing just the one eighth inning unearned run and striking out eight. The win keeps the Monsters a game up on Lowell in the New York Penn League's Stedler Division standings heading into another meeting with the Muckdogs Sunday afternoon at Centennial Field.

Friday, July 4th, 2008

The seven game winning streak seems like ancient history for the Vermont Lake Monsters ... that after a long Fourth of July afternoon in Pennsylvania. The State College Spikes pounded out fourteen hits, and ripped the Monsters 12-0.  The Vermont Lake Monsters got that all important insurance run you are always hearing about on Tuesday night, and this time it really did prove to be ALL IMPORTANT. Vermont had broken a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning on a run scoring single by Derek Norris and a two run double by Michael Guerrero. Tri-City got a run back in the bottom of the sixth and the score stayed 3-1 into the ninth, when Vermont's Steven Englund ripped a one out double, went to third on a ground out, and scored as shortstop Dani Arias struck out, but reached first base on the wild pitch. The Valley Cats then used a hit batter, a pair of hits and an error to cut the margin to one, but Vermont reliever Steven Stewart got the league's leading hitter, Tri City's Phil Disher, to hit a comebacker to the mound to end it. Vermont starter Pat McCoy worked the first five and a third innings, scattering four hits to earn the win. Carlos Peralta got a two inning hold and Stewart finished up for his first save. The middle of the Tri-City lineup combined to go 7-for-12 with five runs and five RBI to lead the ValleyCats to an 8-6 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night Centennial Field. After Vermont had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Derek Norris RBI single, Tri-City responded with two runs in the second inning on a pair of sacrifice flies and then added three unearned runs in the third inning for a 5-1 lead. The game stayed 5-1 until the seventh inning when the Lake Monsters cut the deficit in half on a two-run double from Steve Souza, but Tri-City got the two runs back in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth the Lake Monsters were able to cut the lead in half once again to 7-5 on a two-run triple from Nick Arata. Tri City got one of the runs back in the top of the ninth with an RBI double before Tyler Moore had an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. The Lake Monsters had runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth when James Keithley struckout looking to end the game, which took three hours and 49 minutes to complete. Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

A bases loaded walk in the top of the 10th inning forced home game-winning run as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 3-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Centennial Field. Vermont reliever Steven Stewart retired the first two batters of the 10th inning, but then loaded the bases with a walk, a single and a hit batter. Stewart  then issued a four pitch walk to force home the run. The Lake Monsters took an early 2-0 lead in the game as they scored a run on three straight singles in the second inning and another run on two hits in the fourth. Derek Norris led off the second with a single, moved to second on a Michael Guerrero single and scored on a Jesus Valdez RBI single. Vermont had a chance to score more runs in the second with runners on second and third with no outs, but failed to get it done. Guerrero led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and scored two outs later on an RBI single by Tyler Moore.  But that would be the last hit of the game for the Lake Monsters as ValleyCat pitchers combined to retire the next 16 Vermont batters in order. The Lake Monsters did not have another base runner until Chris Solis led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk. But pinch runner Brian Pruitt was promptly picked off first base. Moore then struckout and Nick Arata fouled out to end the game. The ValleyCats were able to get the game into extra innings when they scored two runs in sixth to tie the game 2-2. After back-to-back singles, they tied the game one out later with a two-run double to rightcenter. The Vermont pitching staff continued to look strong as five different hurlers combined to allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Starter Will Atwood, making his professional debut, allowed one hit in two scoreless innings.  He threw just 17 pitches in the two innings, 15 of which were strikes.

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

After scoring just five runs on 16 hits in three games over the weekend at Lowell, the Vermont Lake Monsters offense woke up on Monday night to score 13 runs on 15 hits in a 13-3 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action at  Centennial Field. The Lake Monsters got the offense rolling in the bottom of the first when they scored three runs to erase a 2-0 deficit. Vermont would end up scoring at least one run in every innings except for the second. Vermont scored a single runs in the third and fourth innings, then added two more unearned runs in the fifth for a 7-2 lead. The unearned runs in the fifth were due to a throwing error by ValleyCat shortstop Jeff Hulett, one of six errors in the game by the Tri-City defense. After the ValleyCats got a run back in the sixth , the Lake Monsters got the run right back in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring wild pitch for an 8-3 lead. It was one of three runs that Vermont would score on a wild pitch in the game. The Lake Monsters put the game away for good in the seventh with four runs, all coming after the first two batters in the inning struckout. Robby Jacobsen got the rally started with a single and Steve Souza followed with his first home run of the season for Vermont. After two singles and a walk, Stephen Englund lined a two-run single. Things got off to a rocky beginning for Vermont starter Randy Matias, who allowed a leadoff walk and, one-out later, a two-run homer to give Tri-City a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But Matias (1-1) would settle down to retire the next 12 batters and ended the night with three runs allowed on four hits in six innings for his first win of the season. Derek Norris was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a double for the Lake Monsters, while Jesus Valdez was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Souza was 2-for-4 with two runs and the two-run homer, while Michael Guerrero was 2-for-5 with three runs, a double and an RBI. The 13 runs scored were the most at Centennial Field for the Lake Monsters since July 20, 2005.

Three last at bat wins in a three game series ... unfortunately two of the three went against the Vermont Lake Monsters. On Sunday night the Lowell Spinners made it two out of three over the Monsters in the weekend set, taking their second walkoff win of the weekend with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Vermont 3-2. Again Vermont got great starting pitching, as Brad Peacock worked seven innings of four hit/ six strikeout baseball, allowing just one run, but it got away in the ninth and the loss leaves Vermont 2-4 as they return home to open a six game homestand on Monday night at Centennial Field.

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Great pitching and one timely swing of the bat were enough for the Vermont Lake Monsters to break a three game losing streak on Saturday evening. In Lowell, Massachusetts four Vermont pitchers combined on a three hit shutout and Robbie Jacobsen launched the game winning homer in the top of the tenth inning as Vermont edged the Lowell Spinners 1-0. Jacobsen, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth belted the first Monsters homerun of the season, a long shot over the fence in left center to give Vermont their second win of the season. The shot rewarded the efforts of pitchers Ricardo Pecina, Jose Pinales, Carlos Peralta and Casey Whitmer who combined to scatter three hits while striking out eleven Lowell hitters. The Spinners had just one hit after the second inning. Vermont also finished with three hits, getting singles from Michael Guerrero and Steve Souza in addition to Jacobsen's game winning shot.

Some loses are tougher than others and this one was especially tough for the Vermont Lake Monsters. In Lowell, Massachusetts on Friday night the Monsters were one out away from evening their season's record at 2-2. But a two out three run walk off homer by the Lowell Spinners sent them instead to their third loss in four starts, Lowell winning the game 4-2. Vermont took a 2-1 lead into the last of the ninth but the three run shot off reliever Johan Figuereo allowed the home team to steal the win. It also ruined Vermont's best pitched game of the young season. Starter P.J. Dean was superb, working six innings allowing one run on just one hit while walking three and striking out six. Reliever Steven Stewart then worked two scoreless innings allowing just one hit to set things up for Figuereo, but the closer blew the save and Vermont slipped to 1-3 on the season. Vermont had built their lead on an RBI single by Robbie Jacobsen and a Steve Souza sacrifice fly. Michael Guerrero finished with two of the Monsters' six hits.

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

The Oneonta Tigers broke a 4-4 tie with eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings on Thursday night at Centennial Field and went on to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 13-8. After spotting the Tigers a 3-0 first inning lead the Monsters came right back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning. Michael Guerrero doubled home two runs, Stephen Englund singled home the third and catcher Chris Solis doubled home the fourth to put Vermont up 4-3. But the Tigers tied the game with a run off Vermont starter Pat McCoy in the third inning, then sent ten men to the plate in the fourth, scoring five runs off McCoy and outfielder turned pitcher Ryan DeLaughter to grab a 9-4 lead. DeLaughter then gave up a three run homer in the fifth as the Oneonta lead built to 12-4 and the Tigers held on for the win. First baseman Tyler Moore had three hits and an RBI while Solis added a pair of doubles and walked twice and second baseman Nick Arata chipped in a pair of hits and two ribbies as Vermont slipped to 1-2 on the season.

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

It was not a good night at Centennial Field. The visiting Oneonta Tigers jumped on Vermont

starter Randy Matias for three runs in the first inning and went on to pound the Vermont Lake

Monsters on Wednesday night 8-1. The Tigers banged out thirteen hits in the contest and

were in control all the way. Vermont scored their only run on a doubleplay ball in the last of

the eighth inning.

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

A good start to the 2008 season for the Vermont Lake Monsters. The Monsters got a combined

six hitter from Brad Peacock, Carlos Peralta, Johan Figuero and David Stovack on Tuesday night,

beating the Oneonta Tigers 6-4 in the season opener at Centennial Field. Vermont took a 1-0 lead

on a first inning RBI double by third baseman Steve Souza. Oneonta responded with a pair of runs

off Peacock in the second, but the Monsters grabbed the lead for good with a five run fourth. A pair

of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases and centerfielder Stephen Englund delivered a pair of

runs with a single. First baseman Tyler Moore drove home another run with a hit, an infield out scored

another, and shortstop Jose Lozada capped the rally with an RBI single. Souza had a pair of hits, a pair

of stolen bases and an RBI to lead the Vermont attack. Peacock got the win, while Stovack induced a

bases loaded ground out in the ninth to earn the save.

A former Major Leaguer as manager, the return of their pitching coach and a former player coming back as hitting coach highlight the Field Staff for the 2008 Vermont Lake Monsters for the upcoming season.

Ramon Aviles (ah-vil-ez) will manage the 2008 Lake Monsters in his 38th season in professional baseball, while Rusty Meacham returns as Vermont pitching coach for the second straight season. Jason Camilli, who played with the Vermont Expos back in 1995, returns to Centennial Field for his first season as the hitting coach for the Lake Monsters.

Aviles spent parts for four seasons in the Major Leagues, debuting with the Boston Red Sox in 1977 and then playing for three years with Philadelphia (1979-81). A member of the 1980 World Series Champion Phillies, Aviles did not play in the Series after scoring a run in the NLCS. For his career, Aviles hit .268 (51-for-190) with 21 runs, nine doubles, two homers and 24 RBI in 117 career games.

After his playing career, Aviles spent 16 years as a coach in the Phillies Organization, including two seasons as Manager of the Batavia Clippers (now Muckdogs) of the New York-Penn league in 1991 and 1992. He also managed the Gulf Coast League Phillies in 1999 and 2000, then the Phillies’ Single-A affiliate in Clearwater in 2001.

Aviles, a native of Puerto Rico who turns 56 in January, comes to the Nationals organization after managing in the Milwaukee Brewers system with the Single-A West Virginia Power in 2005 and Brevard County Manatees in 2006.

Meacham oversaw a Lake Monsters pitching staff in 2007 that finished with a 3.81 ERA, the lowest by a Vermont team since 2002 and sixth-lowest in the team’s 14 years. Lake Monster hurlers also struckout a franchise record 605 batters last season.

Camilli has spent the last three seasons as the hitting coach for the Gulf Coast League Nationals. A third-round selection in the 1994 Draft by Montreal, Camilli spent seven seasons in the Expos organization. He hit .243 (59-for-243) with 37 runs, 10 doubles, one homer and 21 RBI in 63 games for Vermont in 1995.

2007 Lake Monsters manager Darnell Coles will be manager of the Single-A Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League in 2008, while 2006-2007 Vermont hitting coach Tony Tarasco will join Coles at Hagerstown as the hitting coach for the Suns.

MAXWELL AND LANNAN NAMED NATIONALS MINOR LEAGUE PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE YEAR

Former Vermont outfielder Justin Maxwell and pitcher John Lannan were named by the Washington Nationals

as their Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year, the team announced today. Maxwell, who played with the

Lake Monsters in 2006, began this season at Single-A Hagerstown and ended the minor league season with

Single-A Potomac. Maxwell hit a .301 with 14 homers and 40 RBI in 56 games at Hagerstown and .263 with

His first Major League hit was a pinch-hit grand slam home run on September 11th at Florida. He also hit a home

run on September 25th off of New York Mets starter Tom Glavine. Lannan, who pitched for Vermont during the

2005 season, pitched for three different minor league teams this season before making his Major League debut

with Washington on July 26th. The left-hander out of Siena College was a combined 12-3 with a 2.31 ERA this

season for Triple-A Columbus, Double-A Harrisburg and Single-A Potomac. In six starts with the Nationals,
