Biography

George Commo has been a sportscaster in Vermont since the early 1970's. He has won numerous awards for his work in play by play and radio and television sports reporting.

A native of Burlington, Commo began his sportscasting career in 1974 at WVNY TV ... his first play by play work came when WVNY traveled with the University of Vermont hockey team to the ECAC Championships at Boston Garden in 1975. He succeeded the late Tom Cheek as the radio voice of Vermont hockey when Cheek left to join the Toronto Blue Jays as their radio voice in late1976. Commo served as the voice of Vermont hockey for 18 seasons, adding the role of basketball play by play voice along the way.  He also hosted a weekly television show on Vermont hockey, and became the ECAC hockey television play by play voice as well.

He left Vermont in 1997 and became the play by play voice of Norwich University hockey in 1998 ... a position he continues to hold today. He added the role of Norwich football play by play voice in the fall of 2005. His play by play duties with Norwich are just a part of his role as the Sports Director of the Radio Vermont Group which serves as the flagship for Norwich sports.

Commo has served as the play by play voice of the Vermont Expos (now the Lake Monsters) since their inception in 1994, including their New York Penn League championship season in 1996. He has been a play by play voice of the American-Canadian Tour stock car racing series for many years as well.

He has also been active in the coverage of high school sports ... football, basketball, hockey and baseball for over 20 years. He developed Vermont Broadcast Sports in the fall of 2004 to provide a vehicle for the coverage of high school sports in Chittenden County after it disappeared from the radio in that area. His high school coverage on the Comcast went statewide when the Merchants Bank came on board as the major high school sports sponsor.

A member and past president of the Vermont Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and a member of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, Commo was recently voted the 2007 Vermont Sportscaster of the Year, his seventh such honor. He is also a multi-time Associated Press Broadcast Award winner.

He lives in Burlington with his wife Dot. He is the father of three sons, Kevin, Anthony, and Jack.
